Greatest Piano Cover Ideas and the Familes who Select Them

By Chuck Stewart

I have been in this business long enough to have received some odd requests for items to be covered, more than just pianos. Most of the ideas are either for items that are odd to have covered or for unique ideas for covering a regular piano. I took the liberty of writing some of my favories in the spaces below, I hope you enjoy them.

Dog House Cover. A woman in Wisconsin called and asked if we could make a custom fitted, waterproof cover that could fit the specifications of her dog house. She and her husband were having a disagreement about their ability to keep their dog as an inside dog because of the damage the dog had done in recent weeks to their belongings when they were both at work during the day. The solution was to leave the dog outside all day but she was concerned about the winter weather (both cold and rain) and wanted us to make a cover that would enclose her dog house. We were able to talk her out of it and to get her to upgrade her dog house to one that is more weather appropriate and we did not hear back from them again.

College Team Logos. I have received quite a few requests to put team logos on piano covers. We are usually able to accommodate these requests and can put the logo right above the keys, on the side panel or even right in the middle of the top of the piano, those are my favorite. Most of the time the logos are easy to work with because we can get pretty good artwork. The only odd work comes in to play when people want us to dye the rest of the cover to match the logo colors. To be true to your school, we have dyed piano covers, gold and red, blue and yellow and even red and white. The piano covers all turn out looking fantastic but it can be a little expensive to get the complete dye job done to a piano cover.

House Dcor. Probably the most common reason for an unconventional cover is when the customer wants a piano cover to match the dcor of a certain room in their house. These are the types of clients who tend to not have budget constraints so they are willing to pay a good deal of money to get what they are after. Some of the oddest have been pink and green colors, family plaid patterns, very cool designs for ultra modern music rooms and even request to make a piano cover that will match the pattern of a couch or love seat.

Portrait of a loved one who had passed on and loved to play the piano. I have had this one a few times in my career. We are able to take a portrait and have it blown up to the size of a piano cover. We can then have the portrait embossed right into the fabric. Every time you sit down to play the piano you will be reminded of Aunt Minnie and her love of playing the piano. She will be looking at you with a four foot by five foot face. Hopefully she is smiling.

Custom covers take extra time and money to complete, sometimes as much as five to eight times what a regular cover will cost. Myself, I tend to like a regular old brown or black vinyl piano cover, but then I have never thought of myself as a flashy person.
